Worlds, settings, concepts
This page is a nexus that links to any pages, sites, etcetera that we make for various worlds and settings, and provides summaries for them. It's in no particular order.
Confluence
The world of lissa and kipsang; those who dance in the water and run in the trees. Related species--the bulky semi-aquatic lissa and the dextrous, arboreal kipsang peoples--navigate a cosmopolitan landscape of cultures and social dynamics. An excuse to mix together anthropology, cultural exchange, and light xenofiction.
Fairfell
Following massive events, things are turned on their head in the land of Fairfell. Kings live forever until they are killed, Queens never truly die, and Knighthood is a curse. Cats fly, cows shed their meat, bugs have never been stranger. Post-cataclysmic fantasy where most anything goes. Silly, tragic, whatever tickles the fancy on any given day. (Related settings: Dreamlands, Earth2)
Dreamlands
A scape without limit, a tapestry that connects many places, things, and people through space and time. Seemingly endless realms dwell within. A nexus of sorts, but a tangible place in its own right. Its tangibility varies, though. More of a sub-setting than its own thing. An actual setting located within the Dreamlands is Smole Country. (Related settings: Fairfell, Earth2, Hodgepodge)
Smole Country: In a small part of the Dreamlands, magical creatures go about their lives, unaware their kingdom was once fraught with danger. A very magical, cutesy setting, but down to earth when it needs to be. Take a breather, here.
Earth2
Earth, but a little to the left. Creatures hide in plain sight, in the margins of believability. Ghosts linger past their time. Secret experiments glean fascinating results. Earth, but small towns and even smaller stories slip through the cracks. Earth2 is a dubiously faithful "realistic" setting (Earth) but with several handwaves and alternate historical details to justify stories we want to tell but don't want to place too firmly into Real-Life-Earth territory. (Related settings: Dreamlands, Timber Ridge)
Curvor
Curses rend the hesitant from their creature comforts, the vile from their thrones, and the beastly from their human skins. Horny anachronistic gothic fantasy with vampires and 'dragons.'
Verdens
A place where the tangible and spiritual meet. Anthropomorphic creatures, superstition, and a whole lot of tea. Really just an excuse for real-world language practice with familiar faces, and low-stakes fun.
Perpetual Legacy (PerLa)
The end is only just the beginning. Millennia after the fall of a technologically advanced race of forebears, three intelligent species rise from the ashes. A world of ruins, defunct technologies still twitching to life, and culture blooming within underground networks.
Alderhill
"Fairy" setting. A village and a mountain that share a name, and the forest that stands between and engulfs them both. The line between human and not is capricious. A place where faces change, promises bite, and nothing truly stays the same.
HodgePodge
Extremely casual slice of life contemporary fantasy setting. (absolute non-priority funzone sandbox).
Imbued
Cosmic entities will go to great lengths to keep their far smaller hosts in good health. Your past never leaves you, and more often than not, its marks breach the skin. Something wants you to live a full life, and it's not going to stop on your account. Near and dear personal setting. Low fantasy, surreal and introspective. Focuses on relationships with other people, mental health, and change. There's a fine line between cosmic horror and cosmic care.
Stories
Maybe You're Not Cut Out For This (MYNCOFT)
Anxious inpatient Avery Selks discovers what it truly means to recover, whether they want it or not. Work in progress story centered around themes of mental health recovery, paranoia and agoraphobia, age regression, alienation from one's body, dissociation, and autonomy. (Setting: Earth2)
If It Makes You Happy, Keep It
Elliot Ronan, an aspiring author, struggles to pen a single word. What's worse, he refuses to brainstorm with the two people closest to him: Arthur and Ramona, who he happens to share a body with. Completed novel, 100k+ words. More information on its own page. (See above link). (Setting: Alderhill)
Growing Pains
Three young adults find themselves lost in the wilderness after feeling a strange, ethereal pull, with nothing to rely on but each other. They’ve all gone through a metamorphosis that’s harder to adjust to for some than others. But something calls, deep within the woods, and their hearts. Finished novel, but fairly indulgent and unpolished. Written as a private piece and shared with friends before being shared online. (Setting: British Columbia, Canada)
Nobody's Son (placeholder name)
Marlow, a hermit out in the woods, lives alone, unbothered by anyone, but dreadfully lacking in meaningful things to do. Having inherited his father's legacy, he doesn't want to continue it—yet feels drawn to all the same. He know's he's a snatcher and a halfways thing. He's seen "society folk" now and then, the idea of taking their essence bubbling up to the surface…but some stubborn part of him hasn't let it come to pass, until now. Not quite a sequel, but a story set in the same setting as Keep It, with some shared characters. Work in progress, unsure if we'll ever get to it. Meant to explore more of the untouched territory outside of Mound and what being a 'Nameless' fairy really means, and if such a distinction holds any water anyhow. (Setting: Alderhill)
Skin Deep (placeholder name)
How far would you go to fit in? Outsiders Harou and Fiall both find themselves independently falling into the graces of Clan leader Arrwolen; a beauty-obsessed lissa with flowers in his hair and a loyal group of followers. While life in clan Glittering Scallops is lush, what goes on under the surface is more than meets the eye. Getting out might be far more difficult than getting in. A collaborative story with a friend. Both Fiall and much of the plot are his doing. This one's still a work in progress. (Setting: Confluence)
Timber Ridge
In the forested logging town of Timber Ridge, Canada, something no-one can explain has been going on for longer than the town's been there. Ghosts and grudges haunt the trees. College graduate Danell Parks has made herself at home there to get away from all the noise of the big city, and finds herself falling deeper into the secrets of the town when a chance occurrence pulls her off the deep end. Can she settle a blood-quarrel that predates human history? (Setting: Earth2)
