(Vaughny) What certain smoles do for fun.

(Kell) A group of friends--Fru, Penn, and Clara--enjoying a tea party atop one of Valley-Ho's hills overlooking the Oddly forest.

(Vaughny) The apprentice, based on a plushie we bought that was somewhat smole shaped.

The Apprentice is a young smole studying under Smortimer Purplepaw. He eschews a name in favour of a title, believing one day he will be capable enough to earn a name that feels right for him. Smortimer is often giving him things to do to help him learn, grow, and explore both the valley and his own abilities. One of his first successful spells was to change the colors of his hat and collar, though it had the unintentional side effect of continuing to change colors every single day, or even multiple times a day. Even as a half-functional spell, not many as young as the Apprentice can claim to have the drive nor the capibility to express specific magic this way, thus he quickly caught Smortimer’s attention and was taken under the wizard’s wing.

(Kell) Various critters and the first time I drew gnulls, another sapient race of creatures in Smole Country. They are in fact woodland cousins to smoles! Much like several other creatures in the dreamlands...

(Kell) More Jude. Funny thing about this strip is that Penn does technically have nipples, due to having a functional udder, but that only happened to Penn after visiting a farm on Earth. It's more accurate to say smoles do not inherently possess nipples.

(Vaughny) A smole translation of the My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic main characters. The Dreamlands/Smole Country takes inspiration from the My Little Pony series (earlier generations as well) in addition to other things, so it's only fitting to give the mane six a little tribute. These aren't canonical characters in Smole Country, just reskins for fun.

Notice Twilight's pink foot? It’s a common superstition among smoles that having one differently colored foot is a sign of being naturally gifted at magic, or destined to be involved with magic in some way. Many look to Smortimer Purplepaw Wizard Smole and his titular violet paw as sufficient evidence. Others may dispute this, especially smoles with paws of differing colors who do not practice magic frequently and find the whole belief silly to begin with. Whether or not this trait actually impacts one’s fate or abilities has yet to be ultimately proven or disproven.

(Kell) Some visual explorations of smole magic, and touching upon whiskers as a magical focus. From a tumblr post on the subject:

Thoughts on smole magic…. I think they have a small personalized form of magic casting where for example they can change the color of things in a minor way or produce a little effect etc… Prime opportunity for pulling pranks if you ask me.
Their whiskers can channel this magic more accurately and enhance intended effects, whereas whiskerless smoles have a bit more trouble with directing their magic. Luckily for them, there are plenty of other means by which to channel magic! Anything with a point at the end (hairs, bristles, needles, sticks) helps point the magic in the direction it should go, so in a pinch a brush or even a toothpick works wonders.
Some smoles can accomplish this with a tail as well, should they possess one.
For more fine-tuned magic, anysmole eager enough to try can study magic more intimately, learning spells and rituals, magic words, or even the art of brewing potions. If this is too tall a task, there are services and wild magics smoles can make use of for their needs.
For example, a visit to the pool of colors or a dip into the right parlor in the city of delights is more than enough to satisfy a smole’s desire to change their hue or pattern.
Clara smole helpfully adds: “Whiskers? Plenty useful. I use mine to steer my course, I’m not all that good with directions. I’d be lost without ‘em!”

(Kell) Here is where Jude cropped up for the first time, an idea for a smole character who used to be human before finding himself in Smole Country.

(Kell) A pencil crayon drawing and some watercolors.

(Kell) Concepts for the civilization before contemporary smoles, the "ursmoles." These drawings take place during the major historical period known as the "Age of No Flowers," where magic-eating creatures known as nightmares invaded Smole Country from elsewhere, causing great devestation. They ate up flowers (the seeds of which were not passed on), and smoles, both containing enough magic to attract them. It was a terrifying time. You can see the map looks much different being hundreds of years in the past.

(Kell?) Based on a pony adoptable we purchased from Donnyclaws. We quite like both designs, but Fru really found a home as a smole.

image image image

(Winn) Peach Pit smole, our second attempt at a smole plush. The first was unfortunately much too small and the fur material was fragile. Poor thing. But peach pit turned out well, she has a heart-shaped "pit" full of pony beads since we were out of poly pellets at the time.

image

(???) Test run smole. Looks a bit like a furry frog, inspired by The Lost Forests' "Puggles."

image

(???) A concept for the Answering Hole, ft. a nubby little Clara.

image

(Kell) Initial concepts for Kingsmole, who is not actually a king. More on him later.

image image

(Kell) A couple of drawings of Clara, the courier. Clara has quickly become a favourite.

image

(Kell) A rudimentary map of Smole Country, highlighting places of interest. Smole country was not always so peaceful, and many of the present day names and locations have their roots in something lost to time.

image

(Kell) In the early concepts for smoles, it was sort of like a petsite situation where there were anthro NPCS that could do services for the smaller smoles. While that is no longer the case, as all smoles are in essence "anthros" in the current iteration of the canon, Smortimer still carries out transformative services. Additional note: the dragon smole in this image has been adopted by a friend of ours, SPEARXWIND.

Smortimer's magic quill is able to bring drawings to life in a limited capacity. This is mostly used for entertainment or visual demonstration purposes, though he has been able to make animated artworks that "play" perpetually if he combines the power of his quill with a spell.

(Kell) A couple of the first smole characters ever designed.

(May and Vaughny) The original visuals for Garland's bird form were designed by Avian King's Menagerie, and adjusted by us. The human design was entirely our doing.
